London Christmas street decorations

First on the list - the best of London street decor! And here you are in for a treat, as in London not only do the city officials compete between each other on the most festively decorated boroughs and streets, but the big brands, department stores and smaller communities get involved too.

  • Walk route 1 - Mayfair: From Bond Street station, through a Molton Street and to the jewel of the area - the New Bond Street. Other important stops of the area are the Ritz and The Berkely Square to see Annabel’s, Hedonism Wines, the neighbouring restaurants and hotels, including Koyn and the Conaught.

  • Walk route 2 - Oxford Street, Carnaby and Regents street: Paul Dart’s iconic Christmas Lights and all the central streets (*come during the weekdays or before the dark to avoid huge crowds)

  • Walk route 3 - Covent Garden: Stand under the mistletoe in the apple market, see their annual huge and always so perfect Christmas tree, catch some snow coming down from the Ladure’s terrace and walk around for the festive window displays.

  • Walk route 4 - West London: Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Notting Hill, Belgravia. Walk past Harrods, and in the direction of Pantechnicon, see the Motcomb street while you are there. Then, there are Pavilion and Kings roads, Duke of York and Sloane Squares, Eccleston Yards and the privately decorated houses of South Ken and Notting hill.

Fabulous World of Dior at Harrods

Done with decorations, and so it’s time for an immersive holiday experience. This year’s unmissable one is the Fabulous World of Dior and Harrods. On until the 3rd of January. Dior has transformed the store itself into a Gingerbread House, and the basement spaces into magical story of the brand told through movable gingerbread installations. A true magic of an experience!

3

Festive afternoon tea

And here again, the restaurants, cafes and hotels across London compete with each other as to who creates the most magical experience this holiday season. And a traditional British afternoon tea is a huge part of it.

After a long and hard discussion the choice between the Ritz, Harrods tea room, Four Seasons at Ten Trinity Square, Dorchester, Pan Pacific And Bilmore Mayfair, when we finally settled for the latter. With special tastes of turkey, chestnuts, stollen and so on, Christmas lights and a light jazz on the background, the festive afternoon tea takes it’s honourable place on our Christimas in London list.

4

Christmas markets

Trafalgar Square and the Christmas by the River are my absolute favourites. There is also the Southbank Centre Winter Market, the Leicester Square one, which I tend to avoid due to the huge crowds 24/7. There are a few smaller ones - Christmas Canopy Market at King's Cross, Turning Earth Winter Ceramics Market, Christmas At Portobello, and Independent Ceramics and Crafts markets popping out around this season across the city.

5

Ice rinks

Skate at Somerset House or Glide at Battersea Power Station would probably be the best picks!

I used to love the Natural History one with all my heart, but unfortunately last year was it’s final season in London. The other wonderful options I recommend are Canary Wharf and Queen's House in Greenwich ones.

6

London festive hotels

The Savoy, The Ritz, 45 Park Lane, The Connaught, Claridge’s, The Langham, The London Edition, St Pancras Hotel and The Standard.

Each so different and so special. They offer seasonal experiences on the hotel grounds, set up mini-markets just outside their doors, create seasonal menus at their patisseries, restaurants and bars, decorate the interior and exterior. These are my personal favourites, but London offers many, many more.

7

Christmas concerts

From Christmas Carols in London’s magnificent churches, to the Candlelight Concerts across the city, to the rendition of the Christmas Carol at the newly opened Bridge Theatre - all are a must this season! It also goes without saying but The Nutcracker performances at the ROH, the Royal Albert Hall or by the English National Ballet are a crucial part of the holiday season!

8

Gingerbread City

The Gingerbread City is an annual exhibition , where London’s architects put on their baking hats and reimagine the industry's standards (as well as the holiday favourite typologies) to create an exciting twist on the traditional gingerbread house. So make your way to Belgravia to enjoy the wonderfully childish display with quite world-changing and not-so childish thinking behind it.

To me this year is particularly special, since my design collective is taking a part in it.

9

December favourites - restaurants, cafes, bars

Next up are restaurants, bars and cafes. Have I already mentioned how everyone in London just loves holidays?? The restaurants are no exception. Festive decorations and holiday specials are just a small part of surprises that await you if you do a little bit of googling on the industry’s surprises this season. My personal favourites this December are Restaurant at the 22, bars at the Standard and the Connaught, The Fine Cheese Co. at Motcomb Street and every year’s seasonal favourites - Maison Assouline and Mercato Mayfair.

10

Gifts and decor shopping

It is a truly joyous process if done right. First, we go to Fortnum and Mason - a Christmas paradise. Then, we head to Harrods and Selfridges home departments, Partridges, Soho Home Studio, John Lewis, Liberty, Pantechnicon, Daylesford Organic and a few smaller shops in Notting Hill and Chelsea. We are looking for smaller details, some ornaments, maybe a plate, inspiration on setting up a table and creating some compositions around the house and, of course, cute gifts for friends and family.

* I have done a whole youtube video on Christmas Shopping in London and decorating a house, which you can have a look at on the YouTube channel.

11

Christmas cinemas

We are all coming back to our holiday favourites year after year, after year. And so do cinemas in London. Some offer special snacks during the screening, others only pop up in unique locations with one and only purpose - to show the favourite classics this time of year.

Pop into Everyman, Electric, Selfridges or Backyard Cinemas for the retro feel, cosy rooms and amazing services. Alternatively head to the Enchanted Cinema pop up in North Greenwich.

12

Winter Wonderland

And last but by no means not the least - the iconic London winter wonderland!

It’s easier to say what you will not find there. It is basically a huge attraction park with exciting rides, arcades, festive market stalls and street food. The best way to experience it is to either go during the day with kids, or gather a big group of friends and spend the whole weekday evening riding the scariest slides, drinking mulled wine and enjoying the lights!

And here you have its 12 unmissable London Christmas experiences!

I hope you enjoyed it, and if you have, please like, subscribe and stay tuned for more of London, cause with this city you can never get enough!)
